Great Neches Wilderness Canoe Race : Description: The East Texas River Runners 19th Annual GREAT Neches Wilderness Canoe Race. (August 1st, 2009.) This annual 22 mile race is hosted by The East Texas River Runners Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to conservation and education.

The event is a scholarship benefit for future Trinity Valley Community College (TVCC) students. Any student may apply for the scholarship. Last year $2,000 in scholarships were awarded to a number of students. Monies are held in a discretionary fund at TVCC to fund these scholarships.

Held the first weekend in August, the race begins just below the Lake Palestine dam. The race continues 22 mile down river ending at the Highway 79 bridge, 13 miles North of Palestine. The 2009 event had 69 boats filled with participants from around the country not to mention 3 area Volunteer Fire Departments, EMTs, Anderson County Sheriff and Constable. Exact count of participants was not available at time of this writing, but is estimated at around 150 persons from youth to senior.

Spokesperson for the event, Ed Furman, says that the average canoeist may make the flat-water trip in three to ten hours depending upon the individual’s skill and equipment used. "Skilled canoeists have considered it the 'toughest little race in Texas'," says Mr. Furman. "But for a leisurely-paced race, it is a good opportunity to see the river and experience nature. Those who complete the course may be extremely tired, but many have a definite increase in self-confidence."

The Ocean Baroness : Living and working on an ultra deep water oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico is challenging to say the least. The hours are long and the environment is in so many ways, unforgiving. These photographs offer a small peek into the lives and experiences of those who choose to make their living "working offshore". Fortunately, the hard work here is often rewarded with incredible views of spectacular sunrises and amazing sunsets.

Another reward is the opportunity to work with a diverse and highly intelligent group of individuals. Together these unique people face and overcome monstrous challenges in the fulfillment of their mission to reap nature's bounty. Yet it is done with more care and concern for the environment than one might have come to believe. The overall human effort and logistical planning required to drill a well to depths of over 5 miles below the earth’s crusts with laser precision while floating in thousands of feet of ocean is mind boggling. Now imagine doing this while being located 200 miles from land. There are no stores or repair shops. No doctors, no grocery stores and no king size rooms.

Spirit of Tyler : I regret to inform that most of the 800 photographs I took for the Fort Worth Competion were under exposed. I apologize. My test shots of the event were great. All camera settings double and tripple checked. I read somewhere that this happens to all photographers at least once. Funny the same thing happened in 1984 and I thought that was the last time.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy what I have been able to get posted so far. The repair process for these files is very slow and tedious. I will continue to post new files as time allows.

The deal stands as when I shot these. ALL downloads (right click) are free. The current shoot will not be available for print order. The next shoot will and the downloads shall remain free.
